R&D is focused on anode material, while new applications in the security products arena look promising for lithium battery makers for specialized applications.

Specialized lithium battery makers in mainland China are striving to develop products with greater high pulse current stability and heat tolerance—besides improving battery life and resistance to dropping, and increasing their environment-friendliness.

Both Taiwan and mainland China manufacturers acknowledge that new material development is critical to the industry's progress, particularly in terms of anode material, which determines battery capacity. Research is in progress across the spectrum, from LiCoO₂ and LiNiO₂ to LiSOCl₂ and even LiFePO₄. Manufacturers are increasing the scale of cooperation with universities and institutes to improve their products.

New applications for primary lithium batteries for specialized applications are also on the way. Big players are expanding their focus to tire pressure monitoring systems, RFID, electronic labels medical devices, and price scanners; and new security products such as GPSes and security systems.
