EMS providers in Greater China previously focused on basic PCB assembly and surface-mount products. Today, however, these companies are covering the entire supply chain, from design to raw material procurement and final product assembly. Most of them believe that a thin line now separates ODM and EMS.

More small- and medium-size EMS providers are veering away from basic PCB assembly to focus on providing complete production processes. Large-scale providers have started to engage in R&D, and supply chain and logistics management, as well as after-sales service and recycling.

A number of EMS providers, particularly those based in Taiwan, boast technical expertise, flexible manufacturing processes, fast delivery and high quality. They, however, believe that they will have to strengthen their global management capabilities and improve value-added services to stay on top.
